Thanksgiving Thrifting

I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. I wanted to take a minute to brag about share some recent thrift store finds with you. I took off work the day before Thanksgiving to get a jump start on cooking, but earlier in the day Mr. ShowMe and I went to a few thrift stores. I don't usually find much, but I had some good scores that day. At our first stop I found this fabulous bead box filled with charms, beads, and findings.
See that price? That's right, $7.90, oh yeah, and everything was 25% off that day, so the net was just under $6! What a deal. There were art glass and porcelain beads in it.

And these super cute shoe charms.
The findings alone in there were worth the price that I paid for the whole thing! What a deal!
At our next stop I found these fabric bundles for $.50 and $1.00. For a total of $3.00 I got all of this fabric.
Those two end pieces will make lovely purses and I'm always needing solids to coordinate with prints and to use for linings.
We even scored for Elwood, our Border Collie with this can of tennis balls for $1.00
I consider that a score for Elwood since he's our fetcher and he was down to just one broken tennis ball. Our Australian Shepherd, Jake doesn't really like to fetch. He will do it if you cheer him along every step of the way, but he mostly likes to just take the tennis balls outside and hide them. In fact, he likes doing that with anything he deems important. His bubby's tennis balls, empty two liter Diet Coke bottles that he can snag from the trash when no one's looking, once Mr. ShowMe's cell phone (Yikes!), rawhides, squeaky toys... We just never know what we're going to find when we go in the back yard to check his hiding spots. So while we mostly had Elwood in mind when we picked up the tennis balls, I'm sure Jake will get some enjoyment from them too.

On Friday Mr. ShowMe and I traveled to a neighboring town to attend a huge craft show, (yeah, he's a pretty good hubby, I think I'll keep him!). Since we were in a different town we decided to check out their thrift stores. At one stop I found this.
I wouldn't normally pay $4.50 for piece of fabric at a thrift store, but this is 4 yards and the weight is sufficient for not just purses, but other things too, so I knew I could put it to good use. But the pièce de résistance is that sweet little Florida souvenir plate for a whole quarter! I haven't found any new Florida plates to add to my collection for a long time now!

So beside all the good food on thanksgiving, I've had some fun thrifting over the holiday weekend too. Did you get to do anything fun other than eat and visit with family?

Thanks for stopping by! :)

I Made A Blog Button!

Actually I we made two blog buttons! I we followed Bethany's instructions from In This {Crazy} Life that she shared at a link party. It was easy! Ok, Mr ShowMe had to help, but still.. I made the button image, I just needed some help with the image hosting part and finding the right link to the image. I already had a Flickr account, so instead of using Photobucket like Bethany did, I just put it there, and that gave me a little trouble... but we he figured it out. After making the easy one, I made a grabable one too!

I'm not sure about the collage. The button might be too small for that many images. I was trying to capture the variety of the things we make, but I may change the actual image in the future. Now that I know how to make the button, changing the image will be easy-peasy!

I'll have to add a Buttons page to my blog and put them there, but first I wanted to show them off.

Color Post 3 - Aqua / Turquoise

I've been seeing a lot of pictures lately with pops of aqua or turquoise.

They've really been catching my eye. Red is still my favorite color, but I must say that aqua is a close second. Maybe it reminds me of fun 50's decor that I like so much.
Or perhaps it's the connection to the ocean that I don't get to visit often enough.
But whatever it is, I really love the look of a room with flashes of aqua or turquoise.

I've got a bathroom in my house in desperate need of a makeover. Maybe I could introduce a little aqua there. And speaking of red, I think I really like the two paired together. Hmmm... What if I made this shower curtain that I absolutely LOVE in a pretty shade of aqua,

accessorized with bright red towels and perhaps a rug, and added some artwork for the walls that pulls in both colors? Looks like my to-do list just got a little longer!

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you're having a lovely weekend :)

Are You A Pumpkin Purist?

Mr ShowMe and I are on our own for Thanksgiving this year. We saw his folks off at the airport today for their flight out to his sister's for the holiday. Mom gave me a turkey dressing pep talk, so I'm all psyched up for the challenge now.

I was off work today and did some surfing for recipes to finalize the Thanksgiving menu. We were looking for side dishes. I love the traditional green bean casserole, but Mr ShowMe is indifferent about it. In our quest for recipes we kept finding pumpkin recipes.. Yeah, I know, we were supposed to be looking for side dishes, but the desserts kept distracting me.

And while a lot of these pumpkin recipes look good...

I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to pumpkin. I just want the pie filing, in a pie crust, and topped with a dollop of Cool Whip. Yum!

Are you cooking for Thanksgiving? Is your menu all lined out?

Thanks for stopping by! :)

Thanksgiving Meal Tragedies

I'm ashamed to admit this. I realize that most people my age have become experts at preparing a Thanksgiving spread for their family, but the truth is, I've never had to prepare the entire meal, until last year. I'm an absolute master at some of the dishes. My sweet potato casserole is a must have! I've actually been told that if I don't arrive with my chocolate eclair cake, I won't be allowed through the door. Mr ShowMe can smoke a turkey that falls from the bone. Trust me, with Mr ShowMe's smoked turkey, you won't complain for one minute about left overs, you'll be sad when the last of it's gone. But then there was last year... My mother-in-law was too sick to have everyone over so we were on our own.

The one dish we had never prepared was the dressing. I can't tell you where it all went terribly wrong. I can only tell you that it was awful! And by awful, I mean it was not fit for consumption. That's not an exaggeration. The texture was horrible and the flavor was something like I'd never tasted before. I even tried smothering it in gravy and all that did was ruin the gravy!

Leap forward one year, and we find ourselves on our own again. Thankfully, Mom is better this year, but she and Dad are traveling to the west coast to spend Thanksgiving with their daughter and her family. I wanted to see about buying some dressing from a grocery store deli. You can get containers of it that just need to be reheated. I figure since we had the epic turkey dressing failure last year, we'd just concede defeat early this year and buy it from the experts, but Mr ShowMe isn't ready to give up so easy, he seems determined to conquer the dressing challenge.

So I'm off to find a recipe that includes at least the ingredients that I know were in my Grandmother's dressing. I don't have her recipe, but I know it included certain things. I'm going to find a recipe, and we're going to follow it to the letter! Wish me luck!

Have you had any Thanksgiving dinner tragedies? Surely we aren't the only ones!

Picture Displays

I saw some cute photo displays at Pinterest. Rather simple in design, a plaque of wood, corner embellishments and a small clip to hold a photo. I like that they're so versatile. I have some favorite vintage postcards, and think these are perfect to display those. I can imagine a few of them clustered on a mantel with postcards. They're great for school pictures. The ones I saw online had fabric flowers embellishments, but I decided to try a few different things. The hubs crackle painted and sanded a couple. I think I like them the best. What do you think?

I hope your week is going well, thanks for stopping by! :)

I'm linking up here and at a few other sites that can be found on my Link Parties page.
